RFID chips are being embedded in everything from jeans to paper money, and your privacy is at stake.

“ Right now, you can buy a hammer, a pair of jeans, or a razor blade with anonymity. With RFID tags, that may be a thing of the past. ”

Bar codes are something most of us never think about. We go to the grocery store to buy dog food, the checkout person runs our selection over the scanner, there's an audible beep or boop, and then we're told how much money we owe. Bar codes in that sense are an invisible technology that we see all the time, but without thinking about what's in front of our eyes.

Bar codes have been with us so long, and they're so ubiquitous, that its hard to remember that they're a relatively new technology that took a while to catch on. The patent for bar codes was issued in 1952. It took twenty years before a standard for bar codes was approved, but they still didn't catch on. Ten years later, only 15,000 suppliers were using bar codes. That changed in 1984. By 1987 - only three years later! - 75,000 suppliers were using bar codes. That's one heck of a growth curve.

So what changed in 1984? Who, or what, caused the change?

Wal-Mart.

When Wal-Mart talks, suppliers listen. So when Wal-Mart said that it wanted to use bar codes as a better way to manage inventory, bar codes became de rigeur. If you didn't use bar codes, you lost Wal-Mart's business. That's a death knell for most of their suppliers.

The same thing is happening today. I'm here to tell you that the bar code's days are numbered. There's a new technology in town, one that at first blush might seem insignificant to security professionals, but it's a technology that is going to be a big part of our future. And how do I know this? Pin it on Wal-Mart again; they're the big push behind this new technology.

So what is it? RFID tags.

............On 5th February, Baptists and Independent Methodists in Britain will celebrate together their new covenant partnership that comes onto effect as the Lunar New Year begins. The partnership does not only mean a new ecumenical movement in uniting the body of Christ, but also more than anything, it is a chance for both churches to strengthen each other in order to fulfil the Great Commission.

According to the Baptist Times, the afternoon session of the gathering at Christ Church in Southport, Merseyside will focus on the theme about mission in the real world while the actual celebration will take place in the evening.

Rena Scholes, Overseas Secretary for the Independent Methodist Connexion (IMC), the Revd Dr Alistair Brown, General Director of BMS World Mission, and Fiona Bruce, a member of Stockton Heath Christian Fellowship, and Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Warrington South, are invited to contribute in the mission seminar.

The covenant partnership was confirmed last year by Baptist and IM meetings. It was signed at the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland Church Representatives’ Meeting last November. At that point, IM churches became provisional Union churches, joint members of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB), the relevant Baptist Associations and the IMC. ........................

The conclave to pick the Pope’s successor begins on April 18. 117 cardinals will be locked in a building and take votes until someone is chosen. Who will it be? The cardinals have avoided taking interviews and speaking out publicly. All the media can do is speculate, and with this certain names have emerged as “favorites.” But according to prophecy, the next Pope has already been decided for almost a thousand years. And it’s not who the media thinks it will be.
Catholic leaders have given hints as to who they think should take over the papacy. The next Pope needs to be a great communicator, appeal to the masses, and be able to speak fluently in many languages, including Italian. Age is a factor: John Paul II was the third-longest reigning Pope, and some might want an older man selected as a transitory figure. Others want someone who is younger and will identify with the younger generations of churchgoers. Perhaps a more important factor is the Pope’s country of origin. John Paul II was the first non-Italian Pope in 455 years. Some cardinals may want to return the papacy to an Italian. Others might see an Italian Pope at this time as a step backwards, especially in today’s intricately connected world. They suggest that the next Pope should come from Africa or Latin America, the regions of the world where Catholicism is growing the fastest. One thing is almost certain: the next Pope will not come from United States, because the church wants to distance itself from the lone superpower.

The cardinals believed to have the calibre, charisma and political clout to succeed to Pope John Paul II. If Cardinal Francis Arinze is given the Papal position, he will be the first African pope in over 1,500 years...............

MSNBC..........Comey said the case demonstrates that the United States is pitted against "an enemy that is patient and ... is bent on killing Americans in a very spectacular way."

U.S. officials allege that Barot is a senior al-Qaida figure — known variously as Abu Eisa al-Hindi, Abu Musa al-Hindi and Issa al-Britani — who was an instructor at a terrorism camp in Afghanistan and scouted the targets at the behest of fugitive al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. But Comey indicated that the investigation has not uncovered any evidence connecting the men to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks blamed on al-Qaida.

Prosecutors say the men conducted surveillance on the buildings between August 2000 and April 2001, including video surveillance in Manhattan around April 2001.

In August 2004, the government raised the risk of a terrorist attack to "high" for those specific financial institutions. The color-coded threat level for the rest of the nation remained at yellow, or elevated, the middle of a five-point scale.

Federal authorities, who acknowledged the threat was based mainly on years-old intelligence, said the decision to raise the threat level was based on an abundance of caution and because of the lengthy planning and plotting record of the terrorist network known as al-Qaida....................

Blue, green, red object hovers for hours, defense department denies secret aircraft

The appearance of hovering, flashing lights in the Australian sky last night has residents Down Under wondering what could have been the source.

Readers of the local newspaper, the Northern Territory News, phoned the publication to report green, blue and red lights illuminating the sky above Darwin, around 8:30 p.m.

Laboratory technician Julie Lynn, a self-described skeptic of unidentified flying objects, saw the lights with her husband from their balcony.

"It was fascinating to watch," she told the paper. "I was quite looking forward to curling up on the couch and watching a movie but it had our attention until we went to bed after midnight.

"It hovered in the one place for at least two hours but had moved significantly when we checked on it again before we went to bed. I can't believe there are UFOs or little green men out there – there must be an obvious explanation. And we weren't drinking so it wasn't something we imagined."

........Sixty years after the end of the last war -- a pittance in the light of history -- 25 European nations, including nearly all of the countries on the continent, are united in a common project that guarantees a definitive peace. The institutionalization of Europe makes war impossible and it motivates reconciliation: between France and Germany, between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, and soon between Hungarians and Romanians. At the same time, deep economic integration and a common commercial policy make the EU a zone of prosperity that is relatively well protected against contemporary financial crises.

Those who dreamt of a single federal nation, capable of asserting a strong foreign policy backed by potent armed forces, are perhaps disappointed by the shape of today's EU. But it is a mistake to focus too much on the union's shortcomings and ignore the extraordinary reality that exists before us. Although Europe is more a space governed by a shared rule of law than an expression of a unitary political will, it is currently becoming the greatest economic power in the world.......

President Putin announces Russia has exclusive nuclear missile systems

MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday that his country's armed forces will soon have access to advanced nuclear missile systems unavailable in any other country.

"We are conducting research and are testing the most up-to-date nuclear missile systems, which, I'm sure, will be supplied to the armed forces in the near future," Putin told a conference of high-ranking military officials, according to a translation from Russia's Interfax News Agency.

"What is even more important, these systems will have no analogues in the other nuclear powers during the next few years."

The Bush administration said the developments in Russia's nuclear program are consistent with the Moscow Treaty, signed between President Bush and Putin in May 2002.

"We are confident that Russia's plans are not threatening and are consistent with its obligations, and I think are indicative of a new strategic relationship between the United States and Russia that is focused on reducing threats and increasing confidence," deputy State Department spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters.

The treaty, which required both sides to reduce their deployed strategic nuclear warheads to between 1,700 and 2,200 by 2012, was designed to establish a new strategic relationship between the two nations based on partnership and cooperation.................

Iran Tests Missile Capable of Hitting Israel

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's defense ministry said on Wednesday it had carried out a field test of the latest version of its Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile which defense experts say can reach Israel or U.S. bases in the Gulf.

Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said last week Iran was working on improvements to the range and accuracy of the Shahab-3 in response to Israel's moves to boost its anti-missile capability.

A defense ministry spokesman confirmed a state television report that the test was carried out "to assess the latest developments implemented on this missile." He declined to give any further details.

Iran says its missile program is purely for deterrent purposes. Tehran also denies U.S. and Israeli accusations that it is seeking to develop nuclear warheads which could be delivered by the Shahab-3.

How the Evangelicals and Catholics Joined Forces

In 1960, the last time a Roman Catholic ran for president on the Democratic ticket, evangelical Protestant leaders warned their flocks that electing John F. Kennedy would be like handing the Oval Office to the Antichrist.

So deep was the antipathy toward Catholics that the president of the National Association of Evangelicals sent a distressed letter to pastors saying: "Public opinion is changing in favor of the church of Rome. We dare not sit idly by - voiceless and voteless." The Rev. Billy Graham's magazine Christianity Today said in an editorial that the Vatican "does all in its power to control the governments of nations."

Forty-four years later, less than a fortnight in Christian history, evangelicals and conservative Catholics have forged an alliance that is reshaping American politics and culture.

Now another Catholic Democrat from Massachusetts, Senator John Kerry, is running for president. But this time evangelicals are cheering on the handful of Catholic bishops who have said they will deny communion to politicians like Mr. Kerry who support abortion rights. In an about-face, Christianity Today says in a June editorial that it is "certainly appropriate" for bishops to expect a Catholic president to submit to Vatican authority.

More than political expediency is at work here. Once blinded by suspicion, evangelical and some Catholic leaders have spent more than a decade laying the groundwork for a religious realignment. Though the old animus is not dead, there has been a rapprochement with both moral and theological dimensions, and broad political implications.

Coalitions of Catholics and evangelicals form the backbone in the fights against gay marriage, stem-cell research and euthanasia, and for religious school vouchers. Catholic and evangelical leaders who forged relationships in the anti-abortion movement, which the Baptist theologian Timothy George has called "the ecumenism of the trenches," are now working side by side in campaigns on other culture war issues, and for Republican candidates.

Israeli-Arab war

.........That money-meltdown will, perhaps, take place when Israel launches its major war against the Arabs and then successfully defies the entire world. That successful display of military and political power together with the new financial control that comes with the collapse of paper-money would deliver to Israel the status of being the Ruling State in the world. This writer believes that that event is likely to take place within the next five to ten years or even earlier. Already Israel has successfully defied the President of USA who demanded on several occasions that Israel withdraw her military forces from Palestinian towns she occupied after a wave of Palestinian ‘human bombs’ took a heavy toll of Israeli lives.

An Israel which is armed to the teeth with an arsenal of nuclear weapons seems destined to exploit the Palestinian Intifada and the September 11th attack on America (which created conditions favorable for Israel) with a war in which Israel will defy USA, Europe, the UN, and all the rest of the world, to take control of the entire region in which it is located.

That Israeli war is likely to witness the expansion of the territory of Israel to that promised in the Torah, i.e., from the river of Egypt to the river Euphrates . With success in that act of defiance of the entire world, including USA , and with the predictable collapse of the US dollar and US economy, Euro-Israel would finally have graduated from dependency, first on the British and then USA . The Euro-Israeli State would finally replace the USA and Britain as a military and financial super-power of the world.[5]

It is up to Americans to think of ways to save the United States of America from becoming a client state to what they consider is a client state of America : Israel .

Turning a blind eye to Israel’s spying on America;[6] selling American military secrets to America's enemies;[7] pirating America's technology;[8] illegally stockpiling weapons of mass destruction;[9] attacking an American naval vessel in international waters and standing by and letting Americans be killed[10] is one thing. But replacing the US as a Ruling State is totally anther. And most importantly, this time around the transition would not be as smooth as the US replaced Britain as the Ruling State in the last century.

The Israel ’s replacing the US as a Ruling State is happening right before the eyes of the Americans. People with vision and no personal stakes are telling the Americans the truth,[11] but they seem as helpless as the British looked during the last days of their waning empire...........

The US financial holocaust to come

....On July 1 1944 , as part of what became known as the Bretton Woods Agreement, the American government gave its word to the American people and to the world that in exchange for $35 US paper dollars, the American government would hand over an ounce of real gold. That was the promise that gave the American paper dollar its value!! In fact, the vast warehouse of gold stored at Fort Knox came to be acknowledged and accepted as the tangible proof of that promise. The world had to trust ever since, that the US government would not print any more paper money than there was real wealth to redeem the bills. That is the understanding and the promise upon which the value of American paper money has been based.[2]

However, neither the government (the elite), nor the media (the elite) saw fit to make it clear to the American people that the real wealth and value (upon which the American paper money was based), was systematically being removed!

As long as a gold coin is made of gold, it can theoretically be taken to any other country in the world and melted down for the value of the gold it contains. However, while the US government has exercised exclusive control over the minting of coins, they have slowly devalued the currency by minting coins which looked somewhat the same, but which contained less of the precious metal than they were supposed to contain. Now the majority of coins in America have scrap metal value only. The dimes, for example, are no longer made of silver, the quarters are now made of sandwiched alloys. In other words, over time, the real value of coins has been stolen!! In case you are wondering, the gold and silver that used to be in the coins has not disappeared or corroded, it's weighing down the Swiss vaults like never before.

During the Vietnam war, there were over 500,000 military personnel that had to be fed, housed, paid, hospitalized and entertained while they weren't busy dropping expensive bombs, and chemicals on a barefoot peasant population. This was indeed a very costly war. But the American elite simply spent, and spent and spent. Of course the elite knew that the American people would have cut off funds for the war if they had been given an opportunity to do so. Instead, the elite used the treasury's printing presses to pay for the Vietnam War. The American government secretly printed as much paper money as it wanted or needed to carry on the War. Eventually, foreign bankers, who suspected this might have been going on (i.e. that paper money was being printed without actually creating the real wealth to redeem it), called America 's bluff by demanding to redeem their American paper dollars for actual gold.

Finally, the US refused to redeem 35 American paper dollars for an ounce of real gold!! The deceit had at last been exposed.

Real money thus has intrinsic value, while paper money has none. Its only value is that conferred upon it by market forces. Its market value will last only for as long as, and to the extent that, there is public confidence in it and demand for it in the market..........

the process that would lead to the collapse of the United States

The real objective was to initiate the process that would lead to the collapse of the United States and elimination of every power base and any hope of unity in the Muslim world.

Look at this in the light of the events of early 20th century. The real target of Franz’s assassination in 1914 was not Russia but the ally of Russia : the Great Britain – the then United States . The Ottoman Islamic State was the other target. It had to be destroyed and Britain had to do the job of destruction during the process of its losing the Ruling State status.

A deeper look reveals that both early 20th and early 21st century circumstances are planned and exploited in such a way that one leads to the creation of Israel and the other to the consolidation of it. In both cases, the world Ruling States have to act in a manner that are self-destructive.

It was obvious that like Austria-Hungary , the attack on the US would not go unchallenged if the US was to continue as a great power. Thus, as a result of its actions against Muslim countries, not only will the Muslim power and hopes of a united approach to world affairs diminish considerably, but will also drain and alienate the US completely in the process. It would thus pave the way for another power to replace it as a Ruling State .

This game plan today is pretty straightforward compared to what was planned in the early 20th century. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia , Britain and France promptly entered the war in support of Russia , and Germany responded by entering the war in support of Austria-Hungary..................

For those of you who have taken the time to read what I have written on this issue, you might assume that the sole aim of the Crusaders in their campaign against the Afghan is to crush Islam and Jihad only. While this is the chief aim, the reality is that the Crusaders have other goals in this campaign also. One is to exercise control over the nuclear reactors in that area, like those in Pakistan, because the possession of nuclear weapons by Muslims is regarded as a great threat to the Judeo-Christian Zionist interests. It wasn't long ago that the Zionists destroyed the nuclear reactors in Iraq, and they are making present attempts to harm the nuclear reactors in Pakistan through a conspiracy.

Another goal is control of the oil fields in Central Asia in an effort to seek further control of this world. If this were not the case, then the whole world is filled with organised terrorist movements in South America, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, North of America, Europe, Spain, Italy and Russia. Why did they not launch campaigns and declare their war on those countries in which these criminal terrorist movements exist? And if this is a war against terrorism, then the state-sponsored terrorism perpetrated by the Zionists in Palestine, the Americans in Afghanistan, the Serbians in Bosnia and Kosovo are true examples of the reality of terrorism............

Experts weigh super-volcano risks

Geologists have called for a taskforce to be set up to consider emergency management in the event of a massive volcanic eruption, or super-eruption.

The recommendation comes in a report timed to coincide with a BBC TV drama that depicts a fictional super-eruption at Yellowstone Park in Wyoming, US.

Experts say such an event would have a colossal impact on a global scale.

A super-eruption is also five to 10 times more likely to happen than an asteroid impact, the report claims.

The authors want to highlight the issue, which they feel is being ignored by governments. They emphasise that while catastrophic eruptions of this kind are rare in terms of a human lifetime, they are surprisingly common on a geological scale.

The effects, say the authors, "could be sufficiently severe to threaten the fabric of civilisation" - putting events such as the Asian tsunami into the shade.

The fallout from a super-eruption could cause a "volcanic winter", devastating global agriculture and causing mass starvation.

It would have a similar effect to a 1.5km-diameter space rock striking Earth, they claim.

The TV drama, called Supervolcano, sticks closely to scientific understanding of these events.

The plot revolves around a series of violent eruptions at Yellowstone in Wyoming that send thousands of cubic metres of rock, gas and ash spiralling up in cloud that rains down over three-quarters of the United States.

Highways become blocked with cars as millions flee the unfolding disaster, and as the chain of eruptions unzips Yellowstone's volcanic crater, hundreds of thousands are killed as the ash swamps whole towns and cities.

America's food-producing regions are devastated, communications are knocked out and planes are forced out of the sky.

Sulphuric acid droplets form in the atmosphere, blocking out sunlight, and causing global temperatures to plummet.

Professor Stephen Sparks, of Bristol University, an author on the new report, said civil contingency plans would need to be similar to those for a nuclear war.

"You would need contingencies for food and shelter. But you would need to put a serious amount of resources into any effort to cope with an event on this scale, so it poses a dilemma," he said.

The volcanic winter resulting from a super-eruption could last several years or decades, depending on the scale of an eruption, and according to recent computer models, could cause cooling on a global scale of 5-10C.

Ailsa Orr, producer of Supervolcano, said that when the programme team presented the scenario to the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema), the agency admitted it had given little thought to such an event happening on American soil.

"We don't want to be sensationalist about this, but it's going to happen. We just can't say exactly when," said Professor Self.

"But we have just had a natural disaster affecting hundreds of thousands of people. Now is the time to be thinking about this."

Yellowstone is the largest volcanic system in North America. The area's cauldrons of bubbling mud and roaring geysers attract nearly three million visitors each year.

It was an obvious choice for the programme makers as the site of their super-eruption because of its location on a highly populated continent.

The crater from the last super-eruption is large enough to fit Tokyo - the world's biggest city - inside it.

The report, released by The Geological Society in the UK, identifies at least 31 sites where super-eruptions have occurred in the past.

Report: U.S. Infrastructure Crumbling

Crowded schools, traffic-choked roads and transit cutbacks are eroding the quality of American life, according to an analysis by civil engineers that gave the nation's infrastructure an overall grade of D.

A report by the American Society of Civil Engineers released Wednesday assessed the four-year trend in the condition of 12 categories of infrastructure, including roadways, bridges, drinking water systems, public parks, railroads and the power grid.

The overall grade slipped from the D-plus given to the infrastructure in 2001 and 2003.

"Americans are spending more time stuck in traffic and less time at home with their families," William Henry, the group's president, said in a statement.

The report concluded that airports will face the challenge of accommodating more regional jets and super-jumbo jets. Grade: D-plus.

It's uncertain, the report said, whether schools can handle growing enrollment and smaller class sizes required by the No Child Left Behind Act. Grade: D.

The report also noted that many transit systems are borrowing money to maintain operations as they're raising fees and cutting back service. Grade: D-plus

Russian General: Our Nuclear Missiles Combat-Ready

Russia 's Soviet-built nuclear missiles have remained fully combat-ready, and the military isn't planning to withdraw them from service en masse, a top general was quoted as saying this week.

The deputy chief of Russia 's Strategic Missile Forces, Lt.-Gen. Vitaly Linnik, said that recent test launches of Soviet-built missiles had proven their worth.

"None of the missile systems on alert duty now has trends of degradation," Linnik said, according to the Interfax-Military News Agency.

The Russian strategic forces have conducted regular test launches of Soviet-built ballistic missiles to check their readiness. Military officials have said that Russia would keep them on duty for another 10 to 15 years - long past their designated lifetime.

"The missiles aren't going to be taken out of service in bulk," Linnik said.

The post-Soviet funding shortage has left the Russian military struggling to extend the lifetime of Soviet-built missiles, since the government lacks the funds to quickly replace them with new weapons.

Over each of the past few years, the Russian Strategic Missile Forces have acquired only a handful of Topol-M missiles - a rate many experts consider insufficient to replace the nation's aging missile arsenals.

Yuri Solomonov, the head of the company that has designed and built the Topol-M, said that its mobile version would reach troops next year, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is developing new strategic nuclear weapons more effective than anything that other nations have. Military analysts have said the new weapon would likely be based on the Topol-M.

Revolution echoes around Russia

The shock waves from Kyrgyzstan's lightning revolution are spreading around the former Soviet Union - and into the heart of Russia - leading analysts to wonder which regimes might be next to face the peoples' wrath.

Recent days have seen a spate of copycat protests launched by opposition groups that were perhaps hoping their own local authorities might fold and flee under pressure, as did Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev when demonstrators stormed his Bishkek complex last week.

About 1,000 people rallied last Friday in the capital of Belarus, where President Alexander Lukashenko runs the last Soviet-style dictatorship in Europe, to demand his resignation. Police quickly dispersed the crowd and dispatched the ringleaders to prison.

Two Russian ethnic republics, Ingushetia and Bashkortostan, have seen mass street demonstrations this week directed against Kremlin-installed leaders. Even in remote Mongolia, the former USSR's Asian satellite, hundreds of protesters gathered last week to "congratulate our Kyrgyz brothers" and demand a rerun of last June's disputed parliamentary polls.

Some experts see a common thread among these upheavals that began 17 months ago when Georgians overthrew Eduard Shevardnadze in a peaceful revolt and continued with Ukraine's "Orange Revolution" late last year.

"Every situation is different, but a single process is unfolding," says Valentin Bogatyrov, a former Akayev adviser and director of the International Institute of Strategic Studies in Bishkek. "Kyrgyzstan is a kind of trigger that will spread this unrest to our neighbors, and beyond. We are witnessing the second breakup of the Soviet Union."

Allegedly fraudulent elections sparked the uprisings in Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan. Among the post-Soviet states that face elections in the next two years are Azerbaijan later this year, plus Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan in 2006. Common features of the regimes potentially under siege include systemic corruption, nepotism, and political appointments based on personal fealty rather than professionalism.

Ironically, the post-Soviet countries that have so far been rocked by revolution have been among the most liberal and relatively democratic in an admittedly tough region. "Akayev, to his credit, allowed a fairly permissive environment for NGO's to work," says Stuart Kahn, Kyrgyzstan project director for Freedom House, which is partly financed by the US government. The danger, he says, is that other Central Asian leaders may see Akayev's concessions to democracy as the Achilles' heel of his regime. "The lesson they may draw is that the permissive, or semi-repressive environment Akayev created is antithetical to maintaining the status quo."

Neighboring Kazakhstan could be next in line for upheaval, some experts say. Former Soviet politbureau member Nursultan Nazarbayev has built a similar crony-centered, semi-democratic and, reportedly, deeply corrupt regime similar to Akayev's government. "Kazakh society will start thinking about more rapid changes," says Mr. Baisalov. "At the very least, Nazarbayev will probably forget any plans about his daughter inheriting power."

Uzbekistan, where another old Communist Party chief, Islam Karimov, rules with an iron fist, is a more worrisome case. "In Uzbekistan the frustration level is growing," says Mr. Kahn. "We've seen protests there already. There's a threat of an extreme reaction to that repression."

Some argue that it's only a matter of time before the revolutionary tide sweeps over Russia. Several of the country's 20 ethnic republics have a similar political profile to Kyrgyzstan, with a long-time ruler monopolizing power and often extending corrupt tentacles into business. "Events around the former Soviet Union have raised the possibility that similar things can happen here too," says Andrei Piontkovsky, director of the independent Center for Strategic Studies in Moscow. "The situation in several of our republics, including Tatarstan and Bashkortistan, look very much like Kyrgyzstan."

New report predicts boost in biometrics in Europe

Biometric entrance systems at school cafeterias, fingerprint scanners to start car engines or face recognition systems on buses could become an everyday reality for Europeans, a new research paper suggests.

The study, "Biometrics at the Frontiers: Assessing the impact on society", was conducted by the European Commission and published on Wednesday, 30 March.

It argues that EU policy-makers should prepare for a boost of biometrics use in everyday life and act now to shape it, referring to both the challenges and potential threats to data abuse and to people's privacy.

EU member states are set to start introducing biometrics in passports, visas and residence permits from the next year, while some countries have already taken such measures – mainly due to US pressure on visa-free European states to issue biometric passports for security reasons.

Biometrics have predominantly been applied in physical access control (42% of the market), but demand has been growing both for its use in IT applications (25%) and in financial services (15%).

The futuristic scenarios portrayed by the study suggest that, by as early as 2015, people will apply new technologies based on biometrics much more intensively in their everyday lives as well as in business, health care and in security services such as border controls.

In a list of examples, the authors suggest that biometric entry systems would be used at school cafeterias or facial recognition facilities for public transport.

Also, people will commonly use digital storage space called virtual residence, where password access is replaced by an iris scanner.

Children will play with biometric toys that recognise registered users, while household appliances could also use biometrics to secure access, such as the cooker using hand geometry.

On the business side, companies could use a biometric access system to their premises and secure electronic payments enabled by a third party, while customers could use it to access shops.

In hospitals, biometrics could be used for accessing electronic health cards or for identity checks in the maternity ward.

The study points out that the biometric industry is currently dominated by the US, "but Europe's share is growing rapidly, particularly in banking."

It says that European policy makers and civil society "feel the American pressure and know about America's mass installation of surveillance technologies", such as metal detectors, scanners, CCTVs, and other forms of detection, access control and biometric equipment in public places, but they question its real necessity.

"Common sense pushed people to adopt a critical attitude, refusing to accept simple answers about safety and protection when there is little evidence that security technology actually makes us safer," the paper argues.

Recent initiatives of the EU governments are expected to boost demand in voice or iris recognition systems, while the use of fingerprints, which is currently a dominant biometric method – is likely to continue as cheaper scanners are bundled with computers.

However, the more frequent use of biometrics is also causing concerns due to possible threats.

Aside from question marks over the costs, privacy protection or social exclusion implications, the new trends could presumably lead to significant power accumulation by those in control of biometric data and their failure to protect individuals from their inclination to trade their own privacy.

The document refers to the existing cases of commercial distribution or exchange of people's biometric data, suggesting "Already today, some American firms present their customers the option to make a commodity of their fingerprints in exchange for the faster acquisition of cheeseburgers".

The authors argue that such choices are portrayed as a casual decision with little or no moral impact, and added "it is easy to imagine people providing biometric samples under time pressure, without precaution. The example of the European dancing club which uses biometrics for access control, demonstrates that monetary or other rewards can have a similar effect in making biometric enrolment look trivial."

Security sources fear anti-aircraft missile attacks

Security sources said this week they are concerned that anti-aircraft missiles the defense minister has said were recently smuggled into the Gaza Strip might be moved into the West Bank and used against commercial aircraft flying over central Israel.

The security sources said there was concern the missiles could be used against planes landing at or taking off from Ben Gurion International Airport, where flight paths veer close to the West Bank.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told the cabinet earlier this week that Israel suspects that members of the Palestinian Authority's military intelligence service were involved in smuggling shoulder-launched Strela anti-aircraft missiles into the Gaza Strip.

Such missiles, which are capable of striking an airplane more than three kilometers above the ground, were recently smuggled into Gaza from Egypt via tunnels in the Rafah area, despite the PA's success in uncovering 17 to 20 such tunnels, Mofaz said.

He added that Israel has demanded the PA find and collect all the smuggled missiles, which he defined as "crossing a red line."

Also Tuesday, Military Intelligence chief Major General Aharon Ze'evi said the terror organizations are trying to export technological know-how and arms experts from Gaza to make weapons in the West Bank.

He reported a discernible lessening of motivation to carry out attacks, which he attributed to the militant groups' agreements to maintain regional calm, but said that at the same time, the capability of terror groups has improved.

Ze'evi also accused Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia of following in the footsteps of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The Military Intelligence chief said Arafat led the Palestinians for 40 years using a divide-and-rule policy and blamed that approach for the tension between Qureia and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who Ze'evi said do not speak to each other.

Speaking to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Ze'evi said Qureia has not been involved in security issues and is disrupting the reform process.

Ze'evi also said Qureia is advancing an agenda that conflicts with the interests of Abbas. The MI director said Abbas is close to carrying out his plan based on ending violence and renewing negotiations with Israel.

U.S., Israel preparing for Iran war?

Beginning on March 10, units of the U.S. Army's European Command stationed in Germany have been in Israel to conduct joint exercises with the Israeli Defense Forces designed to test their combined ability to down an attack of Shahab-3 missiles launched from Iran against Israel.

Code-named "Juniper Cobra," these exercises test the linking of U.S. Patriot missile systems with Israel's Arrow-2 missile-defense systems. The Arrow-2 system is designed to intercept incoming missiles at high altitudes to reduce the fallout damage from nuclear warheads. The Patriot systems are a second line of defense, designed to intercept missiles at lower altitudes. Also involved in the exercises is a U.S. missile ship carrying Aegis anti-missile systems.

U.S. military authorities deny that the exercises have anything to do with the current tensions over Iran's apparently determined drive to develop nuclear weapons secretly. Still, the scenario being tested involves missiles launched against Israel from a "red" whose identity is supposed "unknown," even though the aggressors just happen to speak Farsi. The last Juniper Cobra operation was reportedly conducted in 2001, just before the start of the war in Iraq against Saddam Hussein.

The point of this combined exercise has not gone unnoticed in Tehran. Iran retaliated by announcing this week that tests of the Shahab-3 missile conducted in September of last year proved they had made breakthroughs in the development of the intermediate-range missile. The mullahs stressed that the September test fulfilled all technical expectations, proving fast and accurate at a range of 1,700 kilometers, more than enough to reach Tel Aviv.

In other words, the mullahs want to be sure we all know they have an improved version, a weapon maybe more sophisticated than Operation Juniper Cobra is testing against.

This Operation Juniper Cobra is not expected to end until mid-April. Put this together with what appears to be a convergence of U.S. carrier battle groups in the region, and the preparations for war are hard to miss.

No wonder we have had a barrage of war denials in recent days from President Bush, as well as Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon of Israel and Tony Blair of the UK. With U.S. military bases now surrounding Iran and approximately 150,000 seasoned U.S. Marines and Army forces in the region, speaking softly hardly conceals the reality of the big stick.

How credible could the mullahs pledge not to develop weapons be when almost every day another lie comes to light? This week there are new charges that Iran is still enriching uranium at a secret underground facility in the Parchin military complex outside Tehran.

Maybe President Bush has just decided to play the mullahs' own game. The president sounds very reasonable when he insists he prefers a diplomatic solution – a little too reasonable to be completely consistent with his second inaugural address or his State of the Union speech.

Terrorists like to talk to buy time, but this president is cagey, too. As the dance drags on, the internal dissent within Iran has a chance to grow, especially if senators like Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and Representatives like Steve King, R-Iowa, succeed in building a congressional consensus that reaches in solidarity across to the opposition groups within Iran. Is it possible that we could see a protest in the streets of Tehran like the ones we just witnessed in Beirut?

Stalled talks can't last forever. What happens if the mullahs refuse to take active steps to destroy their centrifuge farms and dismantle their heavy-water facilities? Well, there is always the military option. That option is very obviously left on the table, even if the president doesn't talk about it very much.

Two billion set to see funeral

A worldwide television audience of two billion people - believed to be the biggest ever - is expected to watch the Pope's funeral on Friday.

Today a river of mourners again began the long, slow process of filing through the doors of St Peter's Basilica for their last sighting of Pope John Paul II.

St Peter's reopened at 3am today with a queue stretching nearly a mile from the steps of the Basilica, along Via Della Conciliazione and around to the ancient home of the Popes, St Angelo's Castle.

This morning police estimated it to be at least 200,000 strong, but the number grew as special trains arrived from Milan, Turin and Venice in the north and Naples, Reggio Calabria and Sicily in the south.

Thirty extra services have been laid on and a rail strike planned for Friday has been cancelled. Several international airlines said they would also up the number of flights to Rome after a surge of inquiries.

Two to four million mourners - along with as many as 200 world leaders - are expected in Rome for the funeral, giving police and officials a security nightmare.

Virtually every country will be represented by their heads of state or most senior politicians, with American president George Bush the biggest name. Cuba will be represented by national assembly president Ricardo Alarcon, despite years of persecution of the church which ended only recently.

The latest to confirm they will attend are: King Albert II, Queen Paola and prime minister Guy Verhofstadt of Belgium; Canadian premier Paul Martin; French president Jacques Chirac and his wife; German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and president Horst Koehler; president Vicente Fox of Mexico.

Police leave is expected to be cancelled - there will be 10,000 officers on duty - and the army may be drafted in. Dignitaries could be helicoptered in to the Vatican, said civil defence chief Guido Bertolaso. "The rest of the journey would be made by car but as yet we have not made any decisions."

Mourners waiting in St Peter's Square have kept themselves occupied singing hymns, praying and watching images of Pope John Paul flashing across giant video screens. Student Alessandra Cetro, 17, from Avellino, who came with friends on a special bus, said this morning: "We just had to be here. It's a historic event and we wanted to experience it but above all we wanted to say goodbye to the Pope. He taught us so much so the least we can do is come and give him a final salute."

Sister Lina, a nun from the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, said: "The crowd have been singing and praying but most of the time it's very quiet and people are just thinking and reflecting on what the Pope did for us."

Those leaving the Basilica spoke of a sombre yet serene atmosphere inside. Charlotte Vincent, from Geneva said: "The Pope looked so peaceful. It was such an overwhelming emotion to see him like that."

The surge into Rome prompted local consumer watchdog Codacons to warn businesses against exploiting the pilgrims.

It is estimated they will earn an additional £65million, including £26million on religious artefacts, including rosaries and images and small statues of saints.

Special camps were being set up in on the outskirts of Rome - with campsites at its two main stadia - to accommodate visitors who cannot afford or cannot find hotel rooms.

Saint's Prophecy: Only Two Popes Remain

When the cardinals of the world pick John Paul II's successor, they may well be choosing the next-to-last pope.

The pope who then follows this choice in the Chair of St. Peter will be the last pope, and after his reign Rome will be destroyed.

Such has been the prophecy of St. Malachy, an Irish bishop who at his death in 1148 A.D. was discovered to have left behind a prophetic list of all future popes beginning with Pope Celestine II, whose papacy began in 1143 A.D.

Malachy included a single line in Latin identifying a characteristic of each pope.

Historians say Malachy's prediction – wherein he listed just 112 popes – has been amazingly accurate.

According to his list, there are just two more popes after the late John Paul II.

Wrote St. Malachy of the last pope: "In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge the people. The End."

According to his biographer St. Bernard of Clairvaux, in his book "Life of Saint Malachy," the saint was known to have the gift of prophesy and had even predicted the exact day and hour of his own death. Saint Malachy was canonized in 1190 by Pope Clement III.

While in Rome in 1139, Saint Malachy is said to have gone into a trance and received a vision in which he foresaw all the popes from the death of Innocent II until the end of time.

Afterward he wrote a few words about each pope and gave the manuscript to Pope Innocent II, who is said to have deposited it in Vatican Archives, where it lay forgotten until it was discovered in 1590 and published. At the time, some questioned its authenticity and it has been the subject of debate ever since.

The manuscript contains 112 prophecies, which scholars have matched with each of the 110 popes and anti-popes since Innocent II .

Here are the prophecies for the most recent popes:

Paul VI. The words of the 108th prophecy are "Flos Florum" (Flower of Flowers). The 108th pope after Innocent II was Paul VI (1963-78). His coat of arms included three fleurs-de-lis (iris blossoms).

John Paul I. The 109th is "De Medietate Lunae" (Of the Half Moon). The corresponding pope was John Paul I (1978-78), who was born in the diocese of Belluno (beautiful moon) and was baptized Albino Luciani (white light). He became pope on August 26, 1978, when the moon appeared exactly half full. It was in its waning phase. He died the following month, soon after an eclipse of the moon.

John Paul II. The 110th is "De Labore Solis" (Of the Solar Eclipse, or From the Toil of the Sun). The corresponding pope was John Paul II (1978-2005). John Paul II was born on May 8, 1920 during an eclipse of the sun. Like the sun, he came out of the East (Poland). Like the sun, he visited countries all around the globe.
Today the final two prophecies are yet to be fulfilled:

The 111th prophecy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The meaning of the olive is unclear. The Order of Saint Benedict – not St. Malachy – has claimed that this pope will come from its ranks and Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its final fight against evil.

The 112th prophecy says, "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman), who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people.
